Virginia Beach, VA - The Regent University Women's Basketball team traveled a few miles down the road to face neighboring school Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon. It was an opportunity to compete against a NCAA Division III team and prove that the Royals belonged in this level of competition, It would be a back-and-forth contest with both teams sustaining runs and the outcome was in doubt until the final few seconds of the game.
Regent fell behind early 4-0 but four straight free throws by Senior
Kaila Murrell (Long Beach, CA) tied the game. Murrell eventually gave the Royals the lead after converting a driving layup and that was followed up by another layup from her sister Senior
Kali Murrell (Long Beach, CA) to put Regent out in front. The Royals eventually were able to grab a three-point lead and as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime, Regent would hold the advantage, 27-25.
The Marlins took the lead in the second half, but Regent would not back down as they continued to attack the basket and score points. Virginia Wesleyan put together a run and pushed their lead to seven points, but the Royals stepped up to go on a run of their own to go back out in front 51-50. The Murrell sisters dominated on the offensive side of the ball but in the end Regent would fall in the hard fought game by a final score of 63-59.
The Royals were led by the Murrells with Kaila scoring 13 points and Kali scoring 9 points. In addition, as a team, Regent pulled down 22 total rebounds and was 7-9 from the free throw line. Regent will be back in action on Tuesday, November 14th when they travel through the tunnel to face the Apprentice School. Tip-off is scheduled or 5:00pm.
