Virginia Beach, VA – The day before Thanksgiving, the Regent University Men's Basketball team traveled only a few miles down the road to face their fellow 757 school, Virginia Wesleyan University. The Royals were thankful for being able to play and hoped to come away with an upset over a strong Marlins team.
In the first half, Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a quick lead, until Freshman Marion Brown (Chesapeake, VA) was able to put Regent on the board, trimming the advantage to 6-2. However, the Marlins continued to put pressure on, increasing their lead to 15-2. Junior Joakim Marie-Joseph (Saint Martin, VI) and Brown would make back-to-back baskets to pull to within nine points. Eventually, Virginia Wesleyan drained a three-pointer and at a timeout they were out in front, 21-7. As the two teams come back on the floor, Junior Chaz Moody (Chesapeake, VA) earned, and made, two free-throws for the Royals, but at the 9:53 mark, Regent found themselves trailing 31-11. Unfortunately, the Royals would go into the locker room behind, 54-19.
Freshman Kristofer Norman (Norfolk, VA) began Regent's scoring in the second half, knocking down a free-throw, but they were forced to call a timeout after the Marlins increased the lead to 60-20. Junior Matthew Nealy (Chesapeake, VA,) Freshman Modokwe Piyassa (Lome, VA), and Norman each continued to help the Royals on the free-throw line, but with 12:28 reaming in the game they trailed 72-26. Norman would score on a lay-up, while Marie-Joseph drilled a three-pointer and converted a layup of his own, but as the final horn sounded Regent fell by a final score of 100-42.
Marie-Joseph led the Royals with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Norman finished with 9 points and two steals. Regent will enjoy the holiday break and be back in action on Wednesday, December 6th for an exhibition with the Apprentice School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
