Box Score Laurinburg, NC – After beginning the 2023 regular season on the road, the Regent University Women's Soccer team got back in the vans and headed south to North Carolina for a Tuesday afternoon match-up with NAIA member Saint Andrews University. It had been four years since the two teams last met and this would be the Royals' first trip to Knights Field. In an exciting game, Regent would come from two goals down and, as time was about to expire, tie the game for a final of 2-2.
The Knights were able to get on the scoreboard first, after they found the back of the net, midway through the first half. After falling behind, the Royals defense began to shut down any opportunities Saint Andrews would have to score again. That effort allowed Regent to go into halftime only trailing, 1-0. Unfortunately, in the second half, the Knights found the goal for their second score of the game to increase the advantage to 2-0. The score stayed that way until Sophomore Avery Bravo (Victorville, CA), who received a pass from Freshman Olivia Charles (Barboursville, WV), scored her third goal of the season to keep the Royals in the game with just few a minutes remaining. As the game was winding down and it looked like Saint Andrews would come away with the win, Junior Audrey Martiny (Guatemala City, Guatemala) delivered a pass to Freshman Sierra Smullen (Snow Hill, NC) who fired a shot past the Knights' goalkeeper, with only 20 seconds remaining, to even the score and help Regent earn the tie with Saint Andrews, 2-2.
The Royals will remain on the road this week as they travel to Sweet Briar College on Friday, Sept 1st. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
