Norfolk, VA – On Saturday morning, the Regent University Women's Volleyball team opened the 2023 season as they hosted a tri-match with Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Clinton College. It would be a great day for the Royals as they did not drop on set and were able to come away with two wins.
Match 1
Regent and the Mustangs faced off in the first match of the day. The Royals wasted no time starting fast as they secured the first set by a score of 25-16. They would keep up the momentum in the second and third sets, winning 25-14 and 25-10, to earn their first victory of the year, 3-0. Sophomore Nicole Walston (Wake Forest, NC) led the Royals with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Freshman Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) served up 8 aces, to go along with 8 kills and 11 digs. In addition, Junior Shaley Wertz (Kansas City, MO) recorded 18 assists. As a team, Regent finished with 34 kills, 51 digs and 19 aces in the win.
Match 2
The Royals picked up where they left off as they came out against the Golden Bears in total control of the first set, winning it 25-12. They would take the second set by the same score and then held on in the third set, 25-18, for the overall win, 3-0. Walston led Regent with 12 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces, while Saunders finished the game with 12 kills, 10 digs and 1 ace. Sophomore Makayla Daniels (Chesapeake, VA) and Freshman Ella Simone (El Paso, TX) both had a team high 4 aces. As a team, the Royals finished with 29 kills, 44 digs and 15 aces.
Regent will return to action on Thursday, September 7th when they host Carolina University at Norfolk Christian. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.
