Greenville, SC – As a historic regular season was coming to an end on Saturday evening, the Regent University Men's Soccer team was in the Upstate to face #1 ranked NCCAA Division II team Bob Jones University. The Royals were looking to pull off the upset in front of the Senior Day crowd and, in order to do so, they would have to take advantage of the opportunities created on the offensive side of the field.
For the first 40 minutes of the first half, Regent's defense pushed back the Bruins offense behind the play of Freshman Landen Staples (Chesapeake, VA) and Senior Joshua Moore (Damascus, MD). In addition, Sophomore Conner Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) was able to turn away a number of Bob Jones shots. Unfortunately, with five minutes remaining, the Bruins converted a free kick to take the lead into halftime, 1-0.
The second half began with a Bob Jones goal off a corner kick, but Regent continued to create some scoring opportunities as the half went on. Their best chance came on a shot by Sophomore Tyler Hambright (Stevens, PA) as he put one over the keeper's head, but it just flew over the crossbar. At the 58th minute, the Bruins were awarded a penalty kick to increase the advantage to 3-0. They would score one more goal, but Sophomore Keith Cardenas (Williamsburg, VA) was able to get the Royals on the board after converting on a shot in the bottom left corner. Unfortunately, Regent could not mount a comeback and fell by a final score of 4-1.
Graduate Student Cameron Laubach (Millville, PA) led the Royals with four shots, while as a team they finished the game with seven total shots.
