Box Score 2 Mount Hope, WV – The Regent University Women's Volleyball team traveled to the Mountaineer State on Saturday for a tri-match with Appalachian Bible College and Boyce College. Today would be the regular season finale for the Royals, but there was still a lot to play for as the postseason was on the horizon.
Game One
Regent started out slow in the first set, but eventually tied the score and then went on a run. A big block by Sophomore Eliana Winn (Albuquerque, NM), followed by a kill from fellow Sophomore Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) led a strong scoring rally. While Senior Jordan Banister (Chesapeake, VA) closed out the set with a block as the Royals cruised to the win, 25-12.
The second set saw Regent, once again, fall behind early but Banister displayed her power at the net as the Royals would claim the lead. An ace by Winn kept the rally going, forcing ABC to call a time out. The Warriors were able to cut into the deficit, but Senior Makyla Daniels (Chesapeake, VA) began to control things from the service line, forcing the Warriors to call another time out. Banister would do it again with a kill, followed by another one from Saunders, as Regent closed out the set, 25-14.
The Royals opened the third set by jumping out to a quick three-point advantage and it would continue to stay that way after a Saunders kill. However, ABC eventually grabbed the lead and was suddenly out in front by three. The score saw a number of changes and it would go down until the end with Regent pulling off the comeback to complete the sweep, 3-0 (25-23).
Gane Two
The Royals and Boyce had met earlier in the season, with Regent coming away with the win. However, the Bulldogs were now ranked in the top 5 of the NCCAA Division II poll and were looking to even up the season series. The first set was very competitive as both teams relied on their strengths to earn points. However, it was the Royals' leaders Saunders, Banister and Daniels who helped lead their time to the set win, 25-20.
The second set saw back-in-forth score changes and, halfway through, things were tied up at 15-15. Boyce eventually was able to gain some momentum and earn four straight points to go out in front. They would keep the advantage, as Regent fell in the set by a score of 25-19.
Just like the first two, the third set was another battle. Neither team could pull away from the other. Freshman Madison Hardiman (Memphis, TN) and Senior Shaley Wertz (Kansas City, MO) set things up for their hitters to tie things up at 23-23. It would remain close, but the Royals would come up short 28-26.
Regent came out swinging in the fourth set and jumped out to an early lead, 10-5. Their advantage remained at five points but both teams matched each other's points. However, it would be the Royals who pulled away for the set win, 25-22.
The fifth, and final, set of the day saw Regent carry over their momentum to grab a four-point lead. However, the Bulldogs managed to pull to within one point to keep it close. In the end though, the Royals earned the final point to win the set and overall match 3-2 (15-13).
Regent will now turn its attention to the South Region Tournament which begins on Thursday, November 21st. Stay tuned for location and times.
