Virginia Beach, VA – The Regent University Women's Basketball team has been on the road a lot this season, but today's road match-up with Virginia Wesleyan University was just a short five-minute van ride from campus down I-64 West. The Marlins are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and have a rich tradition in the Hampton Roads area. However, as the Royals begin their transition to the Coast-To-Coast Conference, they hoped to cement their name in the conversation here in the 757. However, it would begin today as the two teams opened up the Saturday doubleheader.
Regent began the game with two defensive stops; however, they were unable to convert those into points on the other end of the court. Eventually, Senior Courtney Rowley (Lusk, WY) put the Royals on the board with a three-pointer and after a defensive block by Sophomore My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA), Senior Lyriq Reyes (Bogota, NJ) added two more points with a driving layup. The Regent scoring continued with another two Rowley threes, but they would find themselves down 21-12. Rowley and Carter continued to connect on their attempts and Carter remained active on the defensive boards, but the Royals would go into the locker room trailing 30-16.
Sophomore Lindora Lewis (Richmond, VA) came out and hit her first three-pointer of the game and that was followed by a jumper from Rowley. As the game went on Rowley continued to dominate on the offensive end, as Carter anchored the Royals defense. While the two were able to lead the way, Regent was unable to mount a comeback and would fall by a final score of 67-41.
Rowley finished the game with 21 points, while going 5-7 from the three-point line. In addition, Carter recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, November 30th, as they host Methodist University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
