Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gill's first half goal helps Royals earn draw with NC Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, VA – The Regent University Men's Soccer team was back under the lights on Thursday night as they hosted USA South member North Carolina Wesleyan University.  The Royals were looking to get back in the win column to even up their season record.  It would be a game that saw both teams trying to seize the momentum and a number of time stoppages.

It didn't take long for Regent to get on the board, as Junior Graylan Gill (Hanover, VA) drilled a cross shot past the keeper for the early lead.  The Royals would continue to put pressure on NCWU as Sophomore Tyler Hambright (Stevens, PA) had a number of scoring opportunities, to go along with Gill's numerous corner kick attempts.  However, at the half, the score remained 1-0.

The Battling Bishops began the second half by tying the game up off a free kick header.  After the goal, the game became physical with both teams fighting for control of the ball.  Regent was able to withstand the pressure and Gill continued to use corner kicks to try to set up scoring opportunities, as Sophomore Goalie Conner Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) stood strong in the net.  However, as the final whistle sounded, the game ended in a draw, 1-1.

Hambright led the Royals with five total shots, while Gill finished with one goal and ten corner kick attempts.  Henriques had five saves and Graduate Student Cameron Laubach (Millville, PA), along with Junior Drew Thomas (Lynchburg, VA), Senior Josh Moore (Damascus, MD) and Freshman Landen Staples (Chesapeake, VA) shut down a quick NCWU offense.  As a team, Regent out shot the Battling Bishops 13-10.

The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, October 1st, when they host Barton College.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30pm.
