Virginia Beach, VA - The Regent University Women's Basketball team completed their four-game home stretch today against out-of-conference opponent Christendom College. The two teams are no strangers to each other and are known for tight games. The Royals were looking to stop the Crusader's inside scoring and control the pace of the game.
The contest began with Regent competing against a full court press. The Royals have faced the full-court press all season long, which prepared them for Christendom's aggressive style. Senior Lyriq Reyes (Bagota, NJ) put her team on the board first with a driving layup through traffic, while Sophomore My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) followed that with a midrange fadeaway jumper of her own. Just over halfway through the first quarter, Regent was tied with the Crusaders, 6-6.
After some first quarter adjustments, the Royals began the second quarter down just four points to Christendom. Junior Jasmeen Lemons (Houston, TX) pushed the ball forward and scored a layup to help try and keep the game close for Regent. Towards the end of the second quarter, Carter sank two free throws and then Senior Courtney Rowley (Lusk, WY) forced a turnover on the defensive side of the court. The Royals would eventually head into the locker room trailing, 41-22.
The Regent starters took the court to begin the second half, and it was clear that both teams had made adjustments at halftime. The Royals were able to pick up their defensive pressure and cut off the Crusaders scoring from the perimeter. Unfortunately, Regent was unable to mount a comeback and would eventually fall by a final score of 66-42.
Carter and Lemons each finished with 11 points, while Carter also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. In addition, Reyes had a team high four steals.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, January 22nd as they head up Route 13 to Maryland to face Salisbury University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
