Virginia Beach, VA - The Regent University Men's Basketball team is off to a hot start in 2025. The Royals have won their last three out of four games played in January and are averaging nearly 74 points per game across that span. On Thursday, Mid-Atlantic Christian University made their way up Route 17 from Elizabeth City, NC despite the inclement weather. The Mustangs are an out of conference opponent, hailing from the USCAA, but are no strangers to Regent.
The first half began with a tight battle right from the jump-ball. The Royals and MACU quickly found their way to line, and Regent then began to find their pace offensively. Junior Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA) nailed a step back three, halfway through the first half, to put the Royals up 38-26. Junior Anthony Chenault (Portsmouth, VA), a recent transfer, has been a a key contributor for the program since his arrival. Chenault finished the first half with 11 points, leading Regent's scoring initiative. The Royals were 9-9 at the free throw line and would head to the locker room with the lead, 53-44.
The second half saw the Mustangs make a run to get back into the game. After the first ten minutes of the half, Regent found themselves down four points. However, Sophomore Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) had a quick steal that led to a Clark layup. On the next play, Brown poked a ball free on defense, pushed it up the court, leading to a wing three from Sophomore Brendan Goods (Long Beach, CA). Brown, clearly feeding off the energy from the home crowd, intercepted a pass on defense, adding another steal to his stat sheet, and, once again, assisted Clark's three from the top of the key. MACU made one final push and tied the game up at 80-80, but with 0.4 seconds left on the clock, and the Royals' ball around half court, it seemed to everyone in the home crowd that they would witness an Overtime thriller in the 757. However, Brown had other plans. Off an incredible inbound pass from Junior Micah Eastman (Virginia Beach, VA), Brown quickly put up a deep three and drained it for the win at the buzzer. After the shot went in, the home bench cleared, and Regent made their way to the student section to celebrate the win, 83-80.
Brown finished the game with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Clark added 18 points. Goods, the defensive anchor for the Royals this season, added 17 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, January 25th, when they travel to Lynchburg, VA to face Randolph College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
