Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Royals Complete Weekend Road Trip At Pfeiffer University

Misenheimer, NC – On Saturday afternoon, the Regent University Women's Basketball team completed their weekend road trip through the Tarheel State with a match-up against USA South member Pfeiffer University.  After a close, hard fought game the night before, the Royals were looking to bring that momentum to today's game as they faced a team they have never beaten.  Head Coach Donte Minter made some adjustments to his starting line-up today to try to find combinations that could attack the basket.

The first quarter began with Freshman Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) answering a Falcons' basket with a short jumper.  The defense started off strong, stopping the Pfeiffer scoring chances, but eventually the Falcons were able to find the basket and jump out to a double-digit advantage.  However, Regent battled back behind a three-pointer by Groth and scores from Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) and Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) to end the quarter only trailing 18-12.

Shipman would convert two free throws to begin the second quarter, while Carter and Sophomore Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) were able to cut off the lane defensively.  Shipman would score again off a floating jumper, but Pfeiffer was able to go on a run and increase their advantage back to double-digits.  Williams and Shipman would trim the deficit to only 8 points with back-to-back layups and then Shipman would do it again, this time knocking down a short jumper.  As the quarter was ending, Groth drove in for a layup and as the teams headed to the locker room, the Royals were behind 33-24.

Pfieffer started the third quarter with two straight baskets, but Shipman picked up where she left off in the first half getting Regent on the board with a three-pointer and then cutting the deficit to 8 points were a jumper.  The Falcons, however, would answer with a few scores of their own, but Williams came off the bench and immediately capitalized on a layup.  After two free throws from Junior Zipporah Johnson (Waterford, MI), the defense tightened up to keep the advantage to under 10 points.  Every time Pfeiffer would try to go on a run, the Royals had an answer and after a Freshman Makaylah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) basket, Regent would end the quarter within striking distance 50-41.

The fourth quarter began with Pfeiffer scoring eight straight points and suddenly the Royals faced their largest deficit of the game.  That scoring continued for the rest of the quarter as the Falcons' offensive came alive.  Unfortunately, Regent could not get their offense going and were unable to mount a comeback, falling by a final score of 80-43.

Shipman and Groth both finished the game with 15 points each, while Carter pulled down 11 total rebounds.

The Royals will be back in action on Friday, November 21st when they host Bob Jones University in their home opener.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
