Virginia Beach, VA – After one of the program's biggest turnaround victories last weekend, the Regent University Men's Basketball team hosted Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon for their home opener. The new look Royals have made a statement in their previous games, and this was another opportunity to take the next step forward. Today would be the first time Regent has ever faced the Bison, and they were looking to start the series off on a positive note.
Junior
Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) and brother Sophomore
Christian Brown (Chesapeake, VA) started the first half scoring the Royals' first 14 points and then Sophomore
Ichi Layne (Middlesex, VA) came off the bench to drain a three-pointer on his first shot of the game. Senior
Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA) would follow that up with an old-fashioned three-point play and after a layup by Junior
Dorian Tema (Frederick, MD) Regent found themselves with the lead, 27-17. Freshman
Chase Mullen (Virginia Beach, VA) and Senior
Brendan Goods (Melbounre, FL) continued the scoring and after more baskets from Clark and Tema, Regent headed to the locker room at halftime leading 47-33.
Tema and A.Brown picked up where they left off to begin the second half and then Clark and Layne stepped up to drain back-to-back three-pointers. That allowed Junior
Emani Langely (Chesapeake, VA) and Freshman
Darcy Minega (Kigali, Rwanda) to fight through in the paint for easy scores. Freshman
Jaxson Delane (Colonial Beach, VA), playing in his first game of the season, came off the bench and gained control under the basket, while Senior
Joshua Vogt (Rochester, NY) made his presence known with two straight three-pointers. The Royals spread the ball around, getting everyone involved, as Freshman
Carmelo Martinez (San Antonio, TX) and Junior
Logan McElveen (Virginia Beach, VA) brought the fans their feet with two big baskets late in the half. Vogt, Langely and Delane continued to extend the advantage and as the final buzzer sounded Regent would come away with the win by a final score of 91-62.
Clark finished the game with 15 points, while A. Brown and Vogt added 13 points each. In addition, Minega grabbed a team high 8 rebounds and Mullen recorded 3 blocks.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, November 25th when they make the short trip to Virginia Wesleyan University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
