Harrisonburg, VA - Saturday afternoon the Regent University Women's Basketball team traveled to Eastern Mennonite University for their 2025-26 season opener. With nine new players on the roster, the Royals were ready to showcase the strong recruiting class that Head Coach
Donte Minter brought in over the off-season. As they enter the first full season as a member of the NCAA, Regent wanted to prove that that they can compete at the DIII level. The Royals hoped to establish their strong guard play against EMU and if they did, they would also look to get the ball inside.
Regent had a competitive first quarter, which started off with a three-pointer from Freshman Eva Giannini (Avon, CT). However, EMU responded with two threes of their own. The Royals battled back with a couple of two-point jumpers from Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) and free throws from Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) but EMU was able to hold their lead throughout the quarter, 26-15. Shipman began the second quarter with a three-pointer and added a layup a few possessions later. As the half was coming to an end, EMU would go on a six point run sending the teams to the locker room with Regent trailing 46- 28. Unfortunately, the Royals were not able to get over the hump and tried to play catch-up for the remainder of the game. While they continued to find the basket, EMU was able to keep control of the lead throughout the last two quarters and Regent would fall by a final score of 83-59.Â
Shipman finished the game with a team-high 19 points, while shooting 11-15 from the free throw line. In addition, Carter shot 4-5 from the field ending with 10 points, and Freshman Mikaylah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) crashed the boards to finish with 9 rebounds.Â
Regent will be back in action when they travel to Maryland on Tuesday, November 12th to face Goucher College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
