Newport News, VA – On Saturday, the Regent University Women's Basketball team traveled through the tunnel to the Peninsula for a match–up with the #5 ranked NCAA Division III team in the country, Christopher Newport University. It would be a game that featured two teams that will become very familiar with each other as the Royals are set to become members of the Coast-to-Coast Conference next season.
After falling behind by eight points to begin the first quarter, Senior Lyriq Reyes (Bogota, NJ) put Regent on the board with a jump shot from the right wing and that was followed by a Sophomore My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) free-throw. The Royals defense kept the deficit under double digits as they tried to capitalize on missed shots by the Captains. However, as the quarter ended Regent would trail, 18-4.
The second quarter saw an old-fashioned three-point play by Carter to go along with a Senior Courtney Rowley (Lusk, WY) three from the top of the key. However, CNU had an answer with a couple threes of their own. Sophomore Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) would get on the board with two free throws, as would Senior Oghosasse Osadiaye (Marion, MI), to help create some offensive momentum. Carter would keep that momentum going with a driving layup to the basket and suddenly the Royals were finding their way to points. Junior Jasmeen Lemons (Houston, TX) would score the next four points as the two teams headed to the locker room with Regent trailing 46 to 21.
The Royals were unable to put together a run in the third quarter, but Williams converted a layup to get the scoring started in the fourth quarter. Rowley followed that with two free throws and then Carter would score six straight points. Another Rowley three closed out the scoring for Regent and as the buzzer sounded, the Royals would fall by a final score of 92-39.
Carter led Regent with 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Rowley finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds. In addition, Williams was perfect from the free throw line.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, February 5th when they travel to North Carolina to face Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
