Virginia Beach, VA - On Wednesday night, the Regent University Men's Basketball team returned home to face Christendom College in a non-conference showdown. The two teams have a long history together as the games are always competitive. Tonight would be no different as the two teams went back-and-forth in a game that was decided in the final second. Unfortunately, it would be the Crusaders who came out with the win as Regent fell by a final score of 72-70.
In the first half, the Royals built a 10-4 lead thanks to shooting by Sophomore Ichi Layne (Middlesex, VA), who drained a pair of threes in the opening minutes. Fellow Sophomore Chauncey Gilliam (Chesapeake, VA) anchored the interior by scoring inside, while Senior Brendan Goods (Melbourne, FL) provided key defensive stops. The Royals would outscore Christendom 39-36 in the second half as Senior Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA) scored a game-high 18 points, which included a three-pointer that began the comeback. Gilliam delivered a double-double, 11 points, 11 rebounds, and dished out four assists, while Goods added 11 points and 9 rebounds. Junior Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) finished with 9 points, and Junior Logan McElveen (Virginia Beach, VA) came off the bench to play a solid defensive game.
As a team, Regent's bench contributed 27 points, while holding their opponents to just 39% shooting overall. The Royals also outrebounded Christendom by a 43=31 margin.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, January 24th when they host Salisbury University. Tip-off is scheduled for 12;00pm.
