Virginia Beach, VA - Senior
Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) delivered his best performance of his four year career in goal, as the Regent University Men's Soccer team battled Southern Virginia University to a scoreless tie, 0-0. Henriques, who has been a starter since his freshman year, turned away shots in critical moments and when the final horn sounded, he would walk away breaking the program's single game save record with a total of 13.
In the first half, Henriques recorded 11 saves, helping the Royals weather an early offensive push from the Knights. He followed that up with two more saves after halftime to complete the shutout and anchor the defensive performance. Regent's back line turned in its best performance of season, with Junior Landen Staples (Chesapeake, VA), Freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) and Freshman Jack Houseknecht (Yorktown, VA) among the players who logged significant minutes. Staples and Adams each played the full 90 minutes, helping Regent limit Southern Virginia's ability to convert its chances into goals.
The Royals continued to compete in the second half, looking to turn its defensive momentum into an offensive breakthrough. Regent earned five corner kicks after halftime, creating opportunities to challenge the Knights on set pieces. Offensively, Junior Melvin Maldonado (Annandale, VA) led Regent with three shots and Freshman Toby Tracht (Catonsville, MD) added two attempts, while Freshman Jones Ferguson (San Antonio, TX) and Sophomore Raik Peter (Bremen, Germany) each contributed a shot.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, October 17th when they host Warren Wilson College on Senior Day. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
