Norfolk, VA - Even though Saturday's weather included sideways rain and gusts of 35 mph winds, the Regent University Women's Soccer team took the field inspired as they honored their four Seniors,
Anna Teague (Salisbury, NC),
Kristen Miller (Peoria, AZ),
Rhyan Primmer (Stafford, VA) and
Sierra Smullen (Snow Hill, MD). With an opportunity to solidify their spot in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the Royals fought through the elements and found a way to send their Seniors out on top as they defeated Warren Wilson College by a final score of 1-0.
The beginning of the game was highlighted by Primmer, unable to play her final season due to a knee injury, who started and kicked the ball off to her fellow Senior and roommate, Smullen, before Head Coach Briley Fillenwarth subbed her out to a standing ovation from the large contingent of Regent fans who braved the weather. After a scoreless first half, Freshman Victoria Hoffmann (Lewisville, TX) broke through in the 66th minute with the game's only goal, giving Regent the lead. Miller delivered a strong performance in goal, recording three saves and a clean sheet to preserve the shutout. The Royals' defense, led by Junior Serenity Cortez (Fresno, CA), Freshman Finley Hunter (Virginia Beach, VA) and Freshman Audrey Bailey (Powhatan, VA) held strong throughout the game, limiting the Owl's chances, not allowing the them to create many opportunities.
With the win, Regent has taken sole possession of the last qualifying spot for the C2C Tournament. Official teams and seedings will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, Regent still has games left to play and opportunities to prepare themselves. They will be back in action on Wednesday, October 21st when they travel across the Commonwealth to face Emory & Henry University. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
