Norfolk, VA - They say adversity can test person's character and that was the theme of today's regular season finale as the Regent University Men's Soccer team faced fellow Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference member Johnson & Wales University. After a season of injuries and setbacks, the Royals overcame an early deficit to pull off a comeback to defeat the Wildcats by a final score of 3-2.
Regent fell behind early but continued to create opportunities and their persistence paid off in the 20th minute when Freshman Jack Houseknecht (Yorktown, VA) found the back of the net off an assist from Freshman Toby Tracht (Cantonsville, MD) evening the score at 1-1. Just over 11 minutes later, the Royals completed the comeback when Senior Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA), who is the regular Regent goalkeeper but was given the chance to play in the field, scored in the 31st minute, finishing an opportunity created by Houseknecht to give the Royals a 2-1 advantage. Regent would hold that advantage as the two teams headed into halftime.
The Royals wasted little time increasing its lead in the second half when Freshman David Gillespie (Odessa, FL) delivered what would ultimately become the game-winning goal in the 41st minute, finding the back of the net off a pass from Freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) pushing Regent ahead 3-1. With a two-goal advantage, the Royals continued to compete with confidence on both ends of the field. Johnson & Wales attempted to mount a comeback during the second half, but Regent's defensive unit remained composed and worked collectively to limit any opportunities.
In goal, Senior Trevor Grosch (Chesapeake, VA) provided a steady presence throughout the afternoon, recording six saves while playing all 90 minutes. Grosch made three stops in each half, helping preserve Regent's advantage during several key moments. His performance, combined with the efforts of the Royals' defensive unit, helped Regent withstand the Wildcats' late offensive pressure.
In addition to the goals, a number of Royals turned in strong individual performances. Tracht finished the game with an assist and three shots, while Freshman Nathan Rizor (Chesapeake, VA) led Regent with five total shots, including three on goal. Adams also provided an offensive spark, placing all three of his shots on target.
With the regular season now over, the Royals will turn their attention to the C2C Tournament which begins on Thursday, November 5th in Maryland. Regent will face host Salisbury University in the first round. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:00am.
