Petersburg, VA - The Regent University Women's Soccer team battled through a challenging road match-up Wednesday afternoon as they traveled up Route 460 to face Virginia State University. Despite a strong second half, the Royals were unable to mount a comeback and would fall to the Trojans by a final score of 5-0.
Regent faced an early deficit as Virginia State found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Despite the quick start from the hosts, the Royals goalkeeper Freshman Evie Munroe (Wilmington, NC) kept Regent within striking distance throughout the opening half, making five saves during the first 45 minutes. However, the Trojans added three more goals before halftime to take a 4-0 lead into the break.
The Royals continued to battle defensively in the second half while creating opportunities of their own. Freshman Victoria Hoffmann (Lewisville, TX) recorded Regent's first shot of the second half in the 63rd minute, while Senior Anna Teague (Salisbury, NC) added another attempt late in the match.
Munroe was once again a key presence in goal as she finished the afternoon with 10 saves, making five stops in each half while facing 15 shots on target from Virginia State. Regent also received strong efforts from their defensive unit, with Freshman Ava Reyes (Nokesville, NC), Junior Serenity Cortez (Fresno, CA), Junior Faith Perez (Bakersfield, CA), Freshman Lauren Pond (Midlothian, VA), Freshman Finley Hunter (Virginia Beach, VA), and Freshman Audrey Bailey (Powhatan, VA) each logging significant minutes.
The Royals will be back in action on Monday, October 12th when they travel south to face North Carolina Wesleyan University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
