Virginia Beach, VA – It has been 413 days since Head Coach Brett Lindsay stepped foot on campus to build his program from scratch and today his vision turned into reality. For the first time ever, the Regent University Baseball team took the field as they traveled to their 757 neighbor Virginia Weslyan University. With a roster of 40 strong, the Royals took their place in the history books as they played game one of a 40 game season. While the outcome was not what the fans who made the trek down I-64 had hoped for, they would push the Marlins to the brink in a 10-9 extra-inning nail-biter.
Regent wasted no time making their mark, exploding for three runs in the top of the first to seize early momentum for the Royals. Freshman Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA) had a solid day, jump starting the lineup going 3-for-6, scoring four times, while stealing four bases to keep the pressure on Virginia Wesleyan. His speed highlighted Regent's aggressive style, which saw the team finish the game with eight stolen bases. Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) delivered clutch moments, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base, while designated hitter Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX) provided steady production with a hit, two RBIs, and three walks, reaching base four times. In addition, Freshman Caleb Wood (Glen Allen, VA) chipped in with two RBIs, including a key bases-loaded walk in the eighth to give the Royals a one run lead.
On the mound, the Regent pitchers limited the Marlins to just six hits despite the final tally. Starter Freshman Adam Tatham (Ladysmith, VA) set a solid foundation with a scoreless first, and the bullpen, including strong efforts from Junior Kaden Hunley (Saluda, VA) (5.1 IP, 2 ER), kept things close deep into the game.
The Royals will be back in action on Friday, February 20th when they host Southern Virginia University for their Home Opener. First pitch is set for 7:00pm.
