Virginia Beach, VA - They say that Senior Day is viewed simply as a celebration of Seniors who have worked hard to benefit the athletics program of a school. However on Saturday it was more than that for the Regent University Men's Basketball team as they honored Seniors
Joshua Vogt (Rochester, NY),
Brendan Goods (Melbourne, FL) and
Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA). The three Royals have each made significant impacts on the program and are leaving it in a better place than when they found it. Their impact was evident today as they helped carry their team to a 104-86 win over Johnson & Wales University, which helped them close out the season on a three-game winning streak.
Regent jumped out of the gates in the first half, building a commanding 55-43 lead thanks to strong offensive output. The Royals shot 21-of-40 from the field (52.5%), including 7-of-16 from beyond the arc, while dominating the glass with 25 rebounds. Clark set the tone scoring 13 points in the first 20 minutes on efficient shooting while Sophomore Chauncey Gilliam (Chesapeake, VA) dominated the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds which created second-chance opportunities. The second half saw the Royals maintain their momentum, outscoring the Wildcats 49-43 to help close things out. Clark finished with a game-high 25 points, adding 7 assists and 5 rebounds and Gilliam had a career high with 24 points and broke the program's single game rebounding record with 19 rebounds, including 6 offensive boards, while blocking 2 shots to anchor the defense Goods chipped in 13 points, including three threes, and the bench provided a huge spark with 27 points total—highlighted by Freshman Grant Worley (Chesapeake, VA) who had 10 points and 6 rebounds. As a team Regent had 24 second-chance points and a 60 points in the paint, as they controlled the interior and dictated the pace. Defensively, the Royals forced 9 turnovers and turned them into 14 points.
Regent will now turn its attention to the off season as they prepare for their second year in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. In the meantime, they will forever be thankful for their Seniors and the leadership they have shown on and off the court.
