Regent Visits Virginia Wesleyan For the Second Time This Season

Virginia Beach, VA – For the second time in a week, the Regent University Baseball team made the short trip down I-64 to face fellow 757 neighbor Virginia Wesleyan University.  The first game between the two teams was decided in extra innings, but the Royals were looking to, this time, come away with an outcome in the win column.  Unfortunately, despite a two-run home run by Freshman Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) in the second inning, Regent would fall by a final score of 12-6.

The Royals jumped out to an early lead with Sandiford's homer after Junior Ben Tweedy (Altavista, VA) doubled to left-center to get the inning started.  Sandiford finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs, after adding a single later in the game.  Regent extended their lead in the third, tacking on another run to make it 3-0 as Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) delivered an RBI single to left field, allowing Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) to score from second base. On the day, German finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and reached base three times, including a hit-by-pitch.

The Royals offense continued to be productive, with Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) leading the way going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and some heads-up base running that kept pressure on the Marlins' defense. His singles in the seventh and earlier innings sparked potential rallies, and he drew a key walk in the ninth to start a late comeback push.  In the sixth, Regent scored another run, as Sandiford's single advanced runners and set up Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) for an RBI single up the middle.

The Royals' 11 hits were their highest total of the young season, with seven players reaching base multiple times, while drawing seven walks.

Regent will be back in action on Friday, February 27th when they travel to Pennsylvania for a three-game weekend series against the University of Valley Forge.  First pitch is set for 4:00pm.
