Asheville, NC – History was made Saturday afternoon as Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) hit a three-pointer with just 12.7 seconds remaining in the game to give the Regent University Women's Basketball team its first ever win over Warren Wilson College. In addition, it was also the first ever Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference win for the Royals as they fought through adversity with only seven players available for the game.
The first quarter began with the Owls going on a 10-0 run, putting Regent in an early hole. However, behind the shooting of Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) and Shipman, the Royals slowly climbed back into the game. After a number of defensive stops in the second quarter, Freshman Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) banked in a three-pointer to give Regent their first lead of the game 29-28. Fellow Freshmen Mikaylah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) and Eliza Entzminger (Winterville, NC) became very active on the boards and then converted that into points to send the Royals into the half leading 40-34.
Warren Wilson started the third quarter with a run, trimming the advantage to two points and then eventually tied the game at 42-42. A few possessions later they would take the lead, but a three-pointer by Entzminger put Regent back in front. The score changed hands a few more times, but the Royals would trail going into the fourth quarter 54-51. A layup from Carter put Regent ahead, but the Owls went on a run, and the Royals were suddenly down by five points. They would battle back and with 12.7 seconds remaining in the game, Shipman pulled up for a three and drained it to give Regent their first ever conference win, 71-70.
Groth led the team with a Career High 17 points, while Shipman finished with 15 points. In addition, Entzminger scored her second straight Career High with 14 points, Telfer had 13 points and Carter added 10 points. In addition, Telfer grabbed 14 rebounds for a double-double.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, February 10th when they host Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Tip-off is set for 5:00pm.
