Virginia Beach, VA – With their backs against the wall, down three runs in the ninth inning, the Regent University Baseball team found a way to fight through adversity as Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX) delivered a walk-off single to right field scoring fellow Freshman Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA), to cap off a come from behind rally. It was the final game of Spring Break, and the win gave the Royals a sweep of their three games this week.
Trailing 4-1 heading into their final at-bat, Regent's offense exploded against Hilbert College relievers when Freshman Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) began the rally with a lead off single, while Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) followed by drawing a walk, putting two runners on with nobody out. Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) worked a walk to load the bases and then Hunt delivered a run, ripping a single to right field that scored Sandiford and cut the lead to 4-2.
Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) followed with a patient four-pitch walk, forcing in Loucks to make it 4-3 and then Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) grounded sharply to the mound, but the play resulted in an RBI as Vaughan crossed the plate safely, tying the game at 4-4. With runners on second and third and one out, Oblepias came through in the clutch, delivering a single to right field that scored Hunt for the walk-off win, 5-4.
On the mound, Senior Will Maloney (Midlothian, VA) pitched eight innings, giving up only 3 hits and 1 run while recording 5 strike outs and German led the way at the plate finishing 2-5 with 2 RBI's.
Regent will be back in action on Monday, March 16th when they travel through the tunnel to face Christopher Newport University. First pitch is at 2:00pm.
