Virginia Beach, VA - On Tuesday afternoon, the Regent University Basbeall team delivered a historic performance, erupting for 15 runs on 19 hits to defeat Virginia Wesleyan University by a final score of 15-5. The win marks a milestone moment for the Royals, as it is the first time any Regent University athletic team has defeated a Marlins program.
From the opening inning, the Royals set the tone offensively as they scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Leading the charge was Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) who turned in a dominant performance at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring four times. In addition, Junior Ben Tweedy Altavista, VA) delivered an impressive outing as well, also going 4-5 with an RBI and two runs, while Freshman Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) added two hits and two RBI's, and Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) contributed a pair of RBI's and reached base multiple times. In total, Regent tallied 19 hits, drew five walks and stole seven bases .
On the mound, Junior Kaden Hunley (Saluda, VA) got the start, allowing only three runs and striking out three. The Royals' bullpen took control from there, limiting the Virginia Wesleyan opportunities to secure the win. Junior Wyatt Helsel (Poquoson, VA) delivered 2.2 strong innings in relief, allowing just one run, while fellow Junior Wilson Estep (Williamsburg, VA) and Freshman Russel Clark (Newport News, VA) combined to close out the final innings.
Regent's offensive consistency was evident in the line score, highlighted by multi-run innings in the first, fourth, fifth, and ninth. The Royals capped off their day with a three-run ninth inning to put the finishing touches on the historic win.
Regent will be back in action on Wednesday, March 18th when they travel to Hampton to face Virginia Peninsula Community College at Historic War Memorial Stadium. First pitch is at 6:00pm
