Virginia Beach, VA - The cold front finally moved out of the area and Saturday saw 70 degree weather as the Regent University Baseball team concluded it four game series with Berea College (KY) with an afternoon doubleheader. The day would see another dominant offensive performance in the first game for the Royals as they won 6-1, but the second game would be much tighter as they would fall in the finale 4-1. However, it was a great weekend for the young Regent team as they picked up both their first home win and their first series win.
Game One
Sophomore Adam Tatham (Ladysmith, VA) got the start and set the tone on the mound, pitching five solid innings with just one run allowed on three hits while striking out three. Offensively, the Royals came to life in the second inning, plating four runs to seize control. Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) got things started with a lead off single, and after a series of smart at-bats, including a two-RBI double from Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) and a bases-loaded walk to Junior Ben Tweedy (Altavista, VA), Regent built a commanding 4-0 advantage. The highlight came in the fourth when German drove in Freshman Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA) with a home run to left field, extending the lead to 5-0.
Defensively, Regent turned key plays and limited the Mountaineers to only three hits, while Alvarez and German were standout performers at the plate, combining for three hits and three RBIs.
Game Two
Junior Elijah Clarke (Newport News, VA) pitched through four innings, surrendering just one run on two hits with three strikeouts. The Royals struck first in the bottom of the fourth when German doubled home Alvarez for the lone run. Junior Wyatt Helsel (Poquoson, VA) came on in relief and pitched well, but Berea capitalized on a few miscues in the fifth inning to score three runs and pull away. Helsel struck out four over three innings, keeping the Regent in striking distance, but they could not cut into the deficit for a comeback.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10th when they travel to Maryland for a doubleheader with Hood College. First pitch is at 12:00pm.
