Lexington, VA – The final Sunday of the regular season saw the Regent University Baseball team close out a weekend series with a doubleheader at Washington & Lee University. With only one game next week remaining before the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the Royals were looking to add a few more games to their win column as their inaugural year comes to a close.
Game One
Freshmen Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) and Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA) both got on base to start the first inning and that allowed Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) to step to the plate and bring Hunt home on an RBI single to left field for the early lead, 1-0. However, in their half of the inning, the Generals were able to get across four to take a three-run advantage. Regent threatened in the second as Freshman Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) and Sophomore Andrew Knox (Chesapeake, VA) led off with back-to-back singles and then with two outs a Hunt single loaded the bases; however they were not able to cut into the deficit. The Royals got one back in the fifth after Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX) hit a double and then scored on an RBI double by Freshman Caleb Wood (Glen Allen, VA). Unfortunately, that is all the Regent offense was able to put together as they would fall by a final score of 12-2.
Knox finished the game 2-3, while Wood, German, Vaughan, Hunt, Oblepias, Sandiford and Freshman Raz Kolakovsky (San Diego, CA) each added a hit.
Game Two
Wood lined a two-out RBI single to center field scoring German to strike first, but Washington & Lee answered in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead 4-1. In the fourth, Junior Ben Tweedy (Altavista, VA) and Sandiford singled, eventually ending up on second and third, but the Royals were unable to get them home. They had a number of opportunities with runners in scoring position and in the seventh inning, Vaughan and Hunt started a rally with back-to-back singles but the offense could not generate any runs and Regent would fall by a final score of 7-1.
Hunt led the Royals going 3-4, while Sandiford finished 2-3 with a stolen base. In addition, Vaughan, German, Oblepias, Wood and Tweedy each added hits.
Regent will close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 28th when face the same team they began the season with, Virginia Wesleyan University. First Pitch is at 3:00pm.
