Michael W. Allen was named interim head men’s basketball coach at Regent University on Friday, December 13th, 2025. The interim tag will be removed effective February 28, 2025, making him the permanent head coach.
In just half a season, Allen helped lead the Royals to a 5-10 record, which gives him the highest winning percentage in Regent men’s basketball history (.333%). He has already helped bring stability to the program by instilling a fast-paced style offense and looks forward to guiding the Royals in their transition to NCAA Division III, as well as members of the Coast-to-Coast athletic conference.
A native of Terre Haute, Indiana, Allen grew up as a coach’s son, where his father, Herschell Allen, was a successful high school basketball and baseball coach, as well as an athletic director. This constant exposure to sports growing up helped spur Allen into a life of athletics.
A graduate of Shakamak High School in Jasonville, Indiana, he ended his career as the record holder of twelve all-time boys’ basketball records and earned all-conference recognition for three years. In his senior season, Allen averaged 26.4 points per game, dished out five-plus assists per game, and grabbed over four rebounds per game. He also scored a career and state-high fifty-eight points in one game. Allen led his team to two sectional championships and two regional runner-up finishes while accumulating 1,822 total career points. He finished his career in the top fifty all-time leading scorers in Indiana state history and was a two-time Greene County Mr. Basketball.
A Chowan College (now Chowan University) graduate in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, Allen was a men’s basketball co-captain for former coach and hall of famer Bob Burke. While there, he held two school records for three-point percentage in a season (46.3%) and three-pointers made in a game (6).
Upon graduation, Allen spent six years coaching men’s basketball at the collegiate level, with stops as an assistant coach at Chowan University, Indiana State University, Lincoln Trail College, and Maryville College. The Lord then led he and his wife to Norfolk, VA where he spent 15 years as the Athletic Director at Norfolk Christian Schools, as well as serving as the boys’ basketball coach for twelve of those years.
