Virginia Beach, VA – As the regular season begins to wind down, the Regent University Women's Soccer team was not looking ahead on Friday afternoon as they welcomed in Johnson & Wales University (NC) to the Royals' second home at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex. This game would turn out to be one of the most physical games Regent has played all year. However, after falling behind, early in the first half, the Royals continued to put pressure on the Wildcats and were able to score a late goal to earn the hard-fought tie.
Just four minutes into the first half, Johnson & Wales hit a header off a corner kick to grab the quick lead, 1-0. However, Freshman Kristen Miller (Peoria, AZ) did not let that deter her and she was able to turn away three more shots in the half. Freshman Sierra Smullen (Snow Hill, NC) had a number of runs, which helped create scoring opportunities. In addition, Freshman Rhyan Primmer (Stafford, VA) anchored a defense that would not allow another goal in the game. In the second half, Regent's efforts finally paid off when Freshman Olivia Charles (Barboursville, WV) drilled a shot past the Wildcats' goalkeeper, which found the top corner, to tie the game. Freshman Gracie Madden (Ashland, KY), who played goalie in the final 45 minutes, would not let anything by her and as the final whistle sounded, the Royals earned the tie, 1-1.
To go along with her goal, Charles led Regent with six shots on goal, while as a team the Royals out shot Johnson & Wales 12-11. Regent will be back in action on Wednesday, October 11th when they travel to our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
