Virginia Beach, VA - The countdown began last week on social media and the day had finally arrived, as the Regent University Women's Basketball team hosted Berkeley College to open the 2023-2024 season. A game of runs would actually see a lot of physical plays between the two teams, with each having an opportunity to win the game.
The Royals came out strong in the first quarter, beating the Knights' press, to take the early lead 15 -11. In the second quarter, Berkeley began a run and converted a number of scoring opportunities and Regent would go into the half trailing 29-24. As the teams came out of the locker room, it was the Royals who were able to establish the momentum for a double-digit point swing, regaining the advantage 40-39. However, it was the fourth quarter where Regent kept focused and matched the Knights shot for shot, allowing the Royals to come away with the season opening win by a final score of 69-65.
Regent was led by Senior
Kali Murrell (Long Beach, CA) who finished with 19 points and 4 three-pointers, while going 3-4 from the free throw line. In addition, her sister Senior
Kaila Murrell (Long Beach, CA) scored 15 points, who was followed by Junior
Jabarria Brown (Paterson, NJ) and Graduate Student
Brooke Glisson (Virginia Beach, VA), each scoring 11 points. Glisson also led the Royals with 7 rebounds. As a team, Regent converted 7 three pointers and grabbed 28 rebounds.
The Royals will return to action on Tuesday, November 7th as they play their first road game of the season against Johnson & Wales University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
