Virginia Beach, VA – On Saturday afternoon, the Regent Men's Soccer Team hosted Christendom College for the 2023 regular season home opener. After a convincing win on the road to begin the season, the Royals were looking to extend their early win streak against the Crusaders and after 90 minutes of play, on a hot and humid day, they left the field with the win, 2-0.

Regent would get on the board first when Freshman Tyler Hambright (Stevens, PA) found Junior Jonah Harvey (Virginia Beach, VA) on the left side of the field and he was able to fire a shot past the goalie for the early lead, 1-0. The scoring would continue at the 20th minute of the game as Hambright received a cross from Freshman Johnnie Soto Fercovic (Fredricksburg, VA) to score his third goal of season, increasing the advantage to 2-0. After solid play from the defense and a few more scoring opportunities, the Royals would take their two-goal lead into the half.  

The second half was back-and-forth for both teams, as neither could convert on any scoring chances. Freshman Goalkeeper Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) and his defense held strong, turning away any shots Christendom would attempt, which allowed Regent to win the time of possession battle. The Royals were eventually able to turn that into another goal as Hambright scored his second of the game, assisted by Freshman Keith Cardenas (Williamsburg, VA), with a header at the 79th minute and as the final horn sounded, Regent would come away with the win by a final score of 3-0.  

Hambright led the Royals with two goals, and one assist, while Henriques and Junior Loyd Shelton (Franklin, VA) combined for the shutout in goal.  Regent will return to action on Friday, September 1st, as they travel to NCAA DIII and ODAC member Bridgewater College.  Kick-off time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
