Rocky Mount, NC – The Regent University Volleyball team traveled south down I-95 on Thursday for a match-up with NCAA Division III and USA South member North Carolina Wesleyan University. The Royals were taking the court for the first time since being nationally ranked and would face a hostile environment on the road.
The first set was back-and-forth, but the Royals would eventually fall 25-22. The second set was very similar, with both teams playing strong and going toe-to-toe, however it would be Regent who earned the hard-fought win 25-22. The Royals jumped out to a big lead in the third set, but the Battling Bishops chipped away at it to tie things up. Once again it would be back and forth as both teams held their own. In the end, though, it was North Carolina Wesleyan who took the set by a close score of 25-23. Unfortunately, in the fourth set, the Royals could not put together a comeback and fell 25-12, suffering only their second loss of the season, 3-1.
Junior Shaley Wertz (Kansas City, MO) and Sophomore Makayla Daniels (Chesapeake, VA) led Regent with 22 digs each, while Freshman Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) recorded a team high 17 kills. The Royals will be back on the road this weekend as they travel to Maryland for a tri-match with Saint Mary's College of Maryland and Neumann University. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm.
