Salem, VA - The Regent Men's Basketball team continued their weekend road trip on Saturday with a game against Roanoke College. The Royals were, once again, taking on an NCAA Division III member but, as they have done all season, they did not back down to the tougher competition.
Regent jumped out to an early lead in the first half behind the play of Freshman Marion Brown (Chesapeake, VA) but the Maroons would answer and, after a few minutes, they captured the advantage, 17-9. However, Junior Joakim Marie-Joseph (Saint Martin) got inside to pull the Royals to within six points. At the 10:00 minute mark, they would find themselves trailing by double digits, but two free throws by Junior Silas Wertz (Kannapolis, NC) cut the lead to 24-19. Roanoke would go on another run, this time stretching their lead to 20 points and as the half came to an end, Regent would trail, 46-16.
The second half saw the Maroons increase their lead, but Sophomore Joshua Vogt (Rochester, NY) eventually found his stroke from behind the three-point line. Sophomore Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA) was also able to convert a three-point basket, as the Royals attempted to trim the lead, and Marie-Joseph continued to be dominant on the boards, which slowed down some of the Roanoke momentum. A steal by Brown turned into a fast break layup from Marie-Joseph, but unfortunately, Regent was unable to mount a run and would eventually fall at the final buzzer by a score of 88-45.
Marie-Joseph led the Royals with 12 points and finished the game with a team high 8 rebounds, while Vogt added 8 points. Regent will be back in action on Sunday, January 21st, as they host Salisbury University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm
