Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Solid Serving Paces Regent To Third Straight Sweep

Virginia Beach, VA - After an undefeated weekend, the Regent University Women's Volleyball team hosted Washington Adventist University on Tuesday night.  It was a match that combined solid serving from the Freshman and strong net presence from the upper class-men.  That effort set the tone for the night and helped pace the Royals to their third sweep in a row.

The first set saw Regent jump out to an early lead, 10-6, but the Shock were able to pull to within two points.  However, a kill by Senior Jordan Banister (Chesapeake, VA) put the Royals back on serve.  The next few points would be back-and-forth, until Freshman Alaina Braun-Duin (Richmond, VA) took control at the net and the service line.  Sophomore Elianna Winn (Albuquerque, NM) also controlled the service line recording two aces, which allowed Regent to increase their lead to 10 points and eventually win the set 25-14.

A Sophomore Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) kill highlighted the beginning of the second set, but the Royals would find themselves in a one-point deficit.  That deficit grew to three-points until Braun-Duin knocked down another kill.  She would deliver again and then serve up an ace to tie the score.  Mid-way through the set, Saunders and Banister began to find their rhythm as Regent jumped back out in front.  Winn was able to increase the lead through solid serving and then, after falling behind again, Saunders served out the set for the win, 25-23.

The Royals wasted no time in the third set as they jumped out to a commanding lead, 5-1.  More solid serving from Braun-Duin increased the advantage to nine points, forcing Washington Adventist to call a timeout.  Out of the timeout, Braun-Duin continued to serve up points and, when her service was finally broken, she had helped score 12 straight points for Regent.  Freshman Evie Novak (Glade Hill, VA) got in on the scoring from the service line, as Banister and Saunders did the rest to help the Royals win the set (25-4), earning the overall sweep by a final score of 3-0.

Sanders and Braun-Duin finished with 10 kills each and six aces between them (2 and 4), while Senior Shaley Wertz (Kansas City, MO) dished out a team high 15 assists.  In addition, Novak recorded a game-high five aces to go long with 11 assists.

Regent will be back in action on Saturday, October 12th when they travel to the nation's capital to face Trinity Washington University.  First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm.
