Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hambright's Late Goal Lifts Regent To Win Over Mary Baldwin, 2-1

Staunton, VA – On Wednesday afternoon, the Regent University Men's Soccer team traveled to the Virginia mountains to face NCAA DIII member Mary Baldwin University.  The Royals were still on a mission to eclipse the program's all-time win record, but they knew it would take an all-around effort to inch closer to it.  The time of possession would be crucial if they were going to come away with a win.

Regent came out of the gate with a lot of energy, attacking the Fighting Squirrels side of the field, which allowed Sophomore Tyler Hambright (Stevens, PA) to fire off a shot at goal.  The next 20 minutes saw both teams fighting for possession, as Sophomore Conner Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) and the defense did their job in turning away any Mary Baldwin scoring chances.  Junior Graylan Gill (Hanover, VA) created the Royals' second scoring opportunity, but his shot sailed wide of the net, while Sophomore Johnnie Soto Fercovic (Fredericksburg, VA) put a foot on one off a throw in.  It would continue to be a back-in-forth game and at the half the score was tied 0-0.

The second half started off with Junior Drew Thomas (Lynchburg, VA) finding Freshman Samuel McMullin (Rockingham, VA), who connected on a header, giving Regent the lead, 1-0.  After that goal, the Royals did not sit back, as they continued to attack the Fighting Squirrels defense.  Unfortunately, in the 78th minute, Mary Baldwin got past the Regent defense and was able to get one back to tie the game at 1-1.  However, that score did not last long as Hambright grabbed a rebound off a Thomas throw-in and found the back of the net to secure the win, 2-1.   Thomas

The win makes history again for the Royals as they have beaten their third NCAA DIII team in one season.  The previous record was two, which was set earlier this year.

Hambright led Regent with two shots and the game winning goal, while Graduate Student Cameron Laubach (Millville, PA), Gill and Fercovic each recorded a shot.  In addition, Thomas finished the game with an assist and Henriques finished with five saves.

The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, October 26th when they host Virginia State University on Senior Day.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
