Norfolk, VA - It was an emotional evening on Tuesday as the Regent University Women's Volleyball team honored its three Seniors in front of a packed gym. The Royals Student-Athletes, family and friends all came together to thank the Seniors for representing the Royals Way and moving the needle within the program. While the festivities were a big part of the night, Regent had a game to play as they faced Mid-Atlantic Christian University for the second time this season. The Royals shined in the moment and were able to send their Seniors out on top, sweeping the Mustangs by a final score of 3-0.
Shaley Wertz
Wertz, from Kansas City, MO has dished out over 1,000 assists in her career, with over 500 with the Royals. In addition, while at Regent, Shaley has served up over 40 aces and has earned over 90 points. During the 2021 season, she was an NCCAA All-Region Honorable Mention Selection and last season she helped Regent to a South Region Championship and a berth in the National Championships in Missouri. Off the court, Shaley carries a 4.0 Grade Point Average and has been named to the Dean's List every academic year. "When Shaley reached out to me two years ago about transferring in it was such a world-wind of an experience. I never would have guessed then what a blessing she would be to this team. She has played different roles for this team and taken each one in her stride. She is one of the most natural athletes to have come our program and she will be missed." She will graduate with a degree in Business Management and plans to pursue a career in Real Estate or Wedding Planning.
Makayla Daniels
Daniels, from Chesapeake, VA has played a pivotal role in the success of the Royals' program. During her career Makayla has recorded over 500 digs and 500 assists, while serving up over 90 aces. Her single game career highs came against Christendom in 2022 where she had 33 assists and against Lancaster Bible this season, as she finished the game with 27 digs. During the 2022 season the Regent Royals volleyball program had only 7 players 4 of which would return in 2023,
Makayla Daniels was one of the core 4 as Coach KT has affectionately named them. In 2023, Makayla was named to the Bob Jones Invitational All-Tournament Team, received the team's Servant leader award and helped Regent to a South Region Championship and a berth in the National Championships in Missouri. Off the court, Makayla has been named to the Dean's List for three straight years. "Makayla has been an integral piece of this program since the moment she stepped on campus. She has been intentional in building relationships while working to grow her game and play whatever position was needed of her. She is a selfless player and a selfless leader who I trust implicitly. She is an extremely versatile and consistent athlete who shows the love of Jesus in everything she does." She will graduate with a degree in Elementary Education and plans to pursue a career in education or full-time ministry.
Jordan Banister
Banister, from Chesapeake, VA has been an offensive force for the Royals, tallying over 400 kills and over 30 blocks. In addition, she has served up over 50 aces and has earned over 500 points. During the 2022 season, Jordan was named 2nd Team All-South Region, and this season was named to the Bob Jones All-Tournament Team. She also helped Regent to a South Region Championship and a berth in the National Championships in Missouri. Of the court, Jordan is a member of SAAC and has served as its President. "
Jordan Banister has been one of my most surprising athletes to coach. She didn't speak her freshman year and she was the only returner during Spring 2021. Fast forward to now she has been a 3-year captain. She has become the most tremendous leaders and an elite athletes despite having so much adversity come into her life. Regent Volleyball would not be where we are today without Jordan's leadership and grit. She is the 1st and only 4 year senior from my 1st class as a Head Coach. Jordan and I have built this program together and I do not have the words to properly thank her for all she has done for this program and how greatly she will be missed." Jordan will graduate with a degree in Business and plans to pursue a career in her family's car business.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, November 2nd when they travel to West Virginia for a tri-match with Appalachian Bible College and Boyce College. First serve is scheduled for 11:00am.
