Fayetteville, NC – On Wednesday night, the Regent University Men's Basketball team continued its road trip with a stop in North Carolina to face another USA South member, Methodist University. In the four games the Royals have played this year, they have had the opportunity to win and tonight they were looking to break through. Once again, they would have to rely on their speed and outside shooting to achieve the desired outcome.
Freshman Brandon Williams (Windsor, NC) came up with a big defensive block to open up the first half, but the Monarchs went on a 5-0 run for the early lead. Their advantage did not last long as Freshman Christian Brown (Chesapeake, VA) got the hot hand for five straight points and that was followed by a layup from Brendan Goods (Long Beach, CA) to grab Regent's first lead of the game. On the next possession, Sophomore Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) put back an offensive rebound and then fellow Sophomore Micah Eastman (Virginia Beach, VA) drove to the basket to keep the scoring going. Eventually, Methodist was able to tie the game and then take the lead, but an offensive put back by C. Brown tied things back up again. The teams would begin to trade baskets and at the media timeout the Monarchs held a two-point lead, 23-21. A drive by Goods tied the game again, but Methodist answered and jumped out to their second five-point lead. However, on the next possession the Brown brothers teamed up for four straight points with Christian finding Antoine for the scores. Unfortunately, the Monarchs went on another run and as the teams headed to the locker room, the Royals trailed, 47-31.
The second half began with Sophomore DJ Dillon (Franklin, VA) connecting on a three-pointer from the top of the key, but Methodist answered by creating turnovers and turning them into points. As he had done all game, A, Brown grabbed another offensive rebound and put it back up for two more points. Eastman would get in on the scoring with a short jumper and that was followed by another A. Brown basket to keep Regent in the game. A few minutes later A. Brown grabbed two rebounds in a row, taking one the distance for the layup and on the other finding Clark for the fast break basket. Clark would follow that up with a baseline three, while Williams added two more points from the free throw line and Eastman converted a long three-pointer. Unfortunately, the Monarchs had answers, as well, and as the final buzzer sounded, the Royals would fall by a final score of 86-72.
Antoine Brown led Regent with a double-double, scoring 22 points to go along with his 12 rebounds (6 Offensive and 6 Rebound). In addition, Christian Brown and Goods each finished with 11 points, while Goods led the Royals with 5 assists.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, November 23rd, when they make the short drive to face Virginia Wesleyan University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
