Greensboro, NC - After tying the school record for the most wins in a season, the Regent University Men's Soccer team opened the season with a historic win over Greensboro College by a final score of 2-0. It was the first time in program history the Royals have beaten the Pride, who are an NCAA Division III and USA South member. It was a game of opportunities and Regent was able to capitalize on them to earn the shutout win.
The first opportunity came in the final minute of the first half when Sophomore
Keith Cardenas (Williamsburg, VA) found the back of the net, sending the Royals into halftime with the lead, 1-0. The second opportunity presented itself in the 87th minute as, once again, Cardenas found the goal after receiving a pass from Freshman
Samuel McMullin (Rockingham, VA) to put the game away and earn the shutout, 2-0.
For the game, Regent out shot the Pride 13-7, while Sophomore Goalie
Conner Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) finished with three saves. In addition, the Royals attempted five corner kicks to Greensboro's one.
Regent will stay in North Carolina for the weekend, as they travel west for a match-up with Saint Andrews University. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30pm.
