Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Royals open season with home Tri-Match against Saint Mary's College and Randolph College

Norfolk, VA - After completing the most successful season in school history, the Regent University Women's Volleyball team began their 2024 campaign on Saturday at home, as they hosted a tri-match with NCAA Division III members Saint Mary's College (MD) and Randolph College.  The three teams are no strangers to each other and they all were looking to start the season off with early momentum.  Even though a stopped train near the venue and a fire alarm delayed things for a while, the fans were not disappointed in the close and competitive matches they were treated to.

Game One
The Royals found themselves down two sets, but they would come alive in the third behind Senior Jordan Banister (Chesapeake, VA) and Sophomore Erin Saunders (Danville, VA).  Banister started the comeback at the service line, while Saunders showcased her skills on the defensive side of the net.  Freshman Kathryn Morgan (Richmond, VA), playing in her first collegiate match, also helped spearhead the rally with her ability to get the offense started.  While, Regent won the third set, it would not be enough as they fell by a final score of 3-1 (16-25, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25)

Saunders finished the game with 14 kills, in addition to her 20 digs, while Banister recorded a game high 7 blocks and 5 aces.  Morgan led the Royals in digs with 23 and Sophomore Eliana Winn (Albuquerque, NM) finished tied with Banister with 7 blocks.

Game Two
The Royals were looking for a Saturday split as they quickly set the tone of the game, winning the first two sets 26-24, 25-21.  However, the Wildcats would rally back and force a fifth and deciding set.  Unfortunately, Regent was not able to overtake Randolph and ultimately fell by a final score of 3-2 (26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 15-12).  While it was not the outcome the Royals had hoped for, the crowd was very appreciative of the effort shown on the court.  The day showcased an up and coming team who proved today that they can compete with the higher level of competition on their schedule.

Saunders had another standout game finishing with a team high 26 digs and 9 service aces.  In addition, Senior Kiersten Palmbos (Zeeland, MI) dished out 17 assists, while Freshman Alaina Braun-Duin (Richmond, VA) had a game high 18 kills.

Regent will be back in action on Friday September 6th as they travel to Salisbury, NC for a match-up with Livingstone College.  First serve is scheduled 5:00pm.
