Greenville, SC - After a successful Friday night, which saw two victories, the Regent University Women's Volleyball looked to keep the momentum going on Day Two of the Bob Jones Invitational. Today, the Royals were matched up against Lancaster Bible College and host Bob Jones University, two teams they are very familiar with. While the day did not end the way Regent had hope, they came away from the Upstate with four solid performances, finishing the Invitational with a record of 2-2.
Game One (Lancaster Bible College)
Both teams tried to establish the early momentum in the first set, but neither could pull away. The points would go back-in-forth all the way until the end when the Royals gained control and won the set, 25-23. The second set mimicked the first, but Senior Jordan Banister (Chesapeake, VA) controlled the net, allowing Regent to take a four-point lead. However, their advantage did not last as the Chargers rallied to go ahead by one, 14-13. Once again, the set would go down to the wire with Lancaster Bible winning 25-22.
Solid serving from Freshman Alaina Braun-Duin (Richmond, VA) gave the Royals the quick three-point lead to begin the third set. A cross court kill by Sophomore Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) increased the advantage, but the Chargers would not go away. Unfortunately, Regent could not stop the Lancaster Bible rally and fell in the set.
The Royals came out determined in the fourth set, jumping out in front, 8-4. It remained close and, at a time out, Regent was still ahead at 17-14. A big kill and block from Banister put more points on the board, but the Chargers rallied again and the Royals would fall by a final score of 3-1.
Saunders led Regent with 13 kills and 18 digs, while Wertz had a team high 33 assists. As a team, the Royals served up 7 aces, to go along with 8 total kills.
Game Two (Bob Jones)
The first set was a battle with Regent taking a lead, but the Bruins fought back to take their own advantage. Sophomore Hannah Narvaez (Houston, TX) pulled it close with her serves but Bob Jones came away with the win, 25-22. The second set went the same way, as both teams tried to pull away. The Royals had an opportunity, but unfortunately would fall in another close one, 25-22. Braun-Duin stepped up her performance for Regent, with a number of kills, to help the Royals take a third set lead and Freshman Kathryn Morgan (Richmond, VA) helped set up rallies, but it would not be enough as Regent fell in the match by a final score of 3-0.
Braun-Duin led the Royals with 10 kills and Saunders finished the game with 19 digs. In addition, Wertz had a team high 25 assists.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, September 21st as they host Clinton College. First serve is scheduled 5:00pm.
