Norfolk, VA - After a record breaking performance on Wednesday, the Regent University Men's Soccer team set out to break another record on Saturday afternoon. While the Royals have beaten NCAA Division III programs over the years, they have never beaten more than one in a single season. With a win at Greensboro College a few weeks ago, Regent had the opportunity to beat a second Division III opponent this season, as they faced Gallaudet University out of the United East Conference.
The Royals did not waste anytime as Sophomore
Johnnie Soto Fercovic (Fredericksburg, VA) earned the assist from his corner kick when Junior
Drew Thomas (Lynchburg, VA) took the ball in the air and found the back of the net, just 1:33 into the game. Regent would get on the board again when Graduate Student
Cameron Laubach (Millville, PA) connected on a free kick 15 yards out, at the 36:33 mark of the first half, to increase the lead to 2-0. With the two goal advantage, the Royals were able to shutdown any opportunities the Bison tried to create and, as the final buzzer sounded, Regent would set another program milestone while earning the win, 2-0.
Sophomore
Tyler Hambright (Stevens, PA) finished the game with five total shots, while as a team the Royals out shot Gallaudet 20-6. In addition, Regent attempted 13 corner kicks and Sophomore
Conner Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) and Senior
John Morrison (St. Inigoes, MD) combined for the shutout in goal.
The Royals will be back in action when they make the short drive on Tuesday, Sept 10th to face neighboring Virginia Wesleyan University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
