Rock Hill, SC – On Saturday afternoon, the Regent University Women's Basketball team was in the Palmetto State for an NCCAA South Region match-up with Clinton College. The Royals were coming off their first win of the season and looking to capitalize on that momentum. To do so, they knew that they had to play their game and not be rattled by the opposing crowd.
After some back and forth, Sophomore Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) put Regent on the board first with a free throw and that was followed by two layups from Sophomore My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA). The Regent defense would stand strong and at the first media timeout, they led 5-4. The scoring continued as Freshman Kaitlyn Russell (Fredericksburg, VA) converted two free throws, however the Bears eventually were able to tie the game. A few possessions later, Carter drained a jump shot and Senior Lyriq Reyes (Bogota, NJ) made two free throws to keep the Royals out in front. Clinton was able to answer and as the quarter came to an end, the score was tied, 13-13. A few minutes into the second quarter, Clinton grabbed the advantage and proceed to go on a run. Despite points from Carter and Russell, Regent would head into the locker room at the half trailing 41-24.
Carter got things going with a basket to begin the third quarter. Williams and Carter were also able to put together three steals in a row as the Royals stepped up the defensive pressure. Halfway through the quarter, Carter and Senior Jasmeen Lemons (Houston, TX) pulled Regent to within 11 points but the Bears would put together a run to finish the quarter leading 65-43. In the fourth quarter Senior Courtney Rowley (Lusk, WY) got on the board with a three but in the end the Royals would fall by a final score of 94-57.
Carter finished the game with 29 points and 8 rebounds, while Williams and Rowley each added 9 points. In addition, Rowley grabbed a team high 9 rebounds.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, February 1st when they travel through the tunnel to face Christopher Newport University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
