Asheville, NC – Sometimes the injury bug will sneak up on a team and force them to fight through adversity. The Regent University Women's Soccer team has been experiencing this and on Wednesday afternoon, in the mountains of North Carolina, they were tasked with playing a man down to Warren Wilson College for 90 minutes. It was not the ideal situation, but the Royals were no strangers to beating the odds and today that is the exact mindset they would have when they took the field.
Regent was able to establish its defense to begin the first half and that turned into offensive scoring opportunities. However, the Owls eventually broke through to take an early one goal lead. A few minutes later, though, Junior Anna Teague (Salisbury, NC) sent a corner kick in front of the goal and fellow Junior Rhyan Primmer (Stafford, VA) was able to sneak a header past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. The Royals continued to put pressure on the Warren Wilson defense as Freshmen Vera Bagley (Suffolk, VA), Lianne Edmiston (Dallas, OR) and Sarah Brownell (Virginia Beach, VA) combined for seven shots and at the half the score would remain tied. The second half saw Regent settle into a defensive strategy which prevented the Owls from getting their offense going, and as the final horn sounded, the Royals would come away with the draw, 1-1.
As a team Regent out shot Warren Wilson 12-9, while Junior Kristen Miller (Peoria, AZ) finished the game with 4 saves.
The Royals will be back in action when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA on Saturday, October 4th to face Eastern Mennonite University. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
