Newport News, VA – On a Saturday that called for a nor'easter to roll through Hampton Roads, the Regent University Men's Soccer team looked to beat the storm as they traveled to the Peninsula to face Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe and #20 Nationally Ranked Christopher Newport University. The Royals are currently in the toughest stretch of the schedule, but they have been focused as there near the end of five straight road games.
The Royals' defense was tested early in the first half, but fellow Senior Graylan Gill (Beaverdam, VA) and Drew Thomas (Lynchburg, VA) denied the Captains' scoring chances. In addition, Junior Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) was able keep the ball in front of the net to keep the score tied. That defensive effort allowed Gill an opportunity on a free kick, but the wind just pushed the ball to the left of the post. Unfortunately, CNU was able to direct a rebound off a diving Henriques save and then add another as the teams headed into halftime, with Regent trailing 2-0.
The Captains added their third goal to begin the second half, but a few minutes later Thomas snuck a header off a Gill corner kick past the CNU keeper for the Royals' first score of the game. The goal gave Regent momentum, and they began to step up their attack on the offensive end of the field. Unfortunately, they could not cut into the lead and would eventually fall by a final score of 6-1.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, October 14th when they travel down the road to face DI Old Dominion University. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
