Norfolk, VA – When it was announced that Regent University would be making the move to the NCAA Division III level, the Royals knew they would be stepping up the competition on the schedule and there would be a number of firsts for the department. For the Regent University Men's Soccer team, tonight was one of those nights as they faced Old Dominion University for the first time in school history. The Monarchs, a DI school and member of the Sun Belt Conference, presented a challenge for the Royals, but tonight was more than just a game. It was an opportunity for Regent to let the Hampton Roads community know that something special is happening at the University.
The game was an uphill battle for the Royals, but it proved to be an opportunity to experience playing under the lights at a DI school. Junior Trevor Grosch (Chesapeake, VA) would get the start in goal and while he was faced with a number of shots, he finished the game with a career high 12 saves. Also, Freshman Jonathan Dedho-Amaya (Raleigh, NC) was able to give Regent a chance on the offensive side of the field against one of the best defenses in the Sun Belt. While it was not the outcome the Royals wanted, they have now completed the toughest stretch of their schedule, which saw them play two DI teams and two Nationally Ranked DIII teams. With six games remaining in the regular season, Regent will look to bounce back and go into the Conference Tournament on a positive note.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, October 18th when they host Virginia State University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
