Lynchburg, VA – The dorms are empty as the students have gone home for the holidays, but the Regent University Women's Basketball team still had work to tend to before they head home, as they began a three-day road trip to the Hill City. First up on Tuesday afternoon was the University of Lynchburg out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. This would be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the hardwood and the Royals were looking to start the trip off on a positive note.
After a tough start against the Hornets, Regent continued to fight throughout the contest, capping off the afternoon with a 13-point surge in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) led the team with 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while finishing 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Junior Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) provided strong inside play with 11 points and 6 rebounds, while Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) battled on the boards for a team-high 7 rebounds. Defensively, fellow Freshmen Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) and Eliza Entzminger (Winterville, NC) each tallied 2 steals, helping the Royals create turnovers and transition opportunities.
Despite facing a Lynchburg team that shot efficiently, Regent continued to find positives. The Royals out rebounded their season average with 33 total boards, including 11 offensive rebounds, and demonstrated improved team defense in the second half — holding the Hornets to just 10 points in the final quarter.
Regent will remain in the Hill City until they are back in action on Thursday, December 18th when they face Randolph College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
