Rocky Mount, NC – The Regent University Men's Basketball team played a rare noon game on Wednesday afternoon as they faced North Carolina Wesleyan University in a non-conference game. While the start time presented an early morning routine and a drive down Route 58 to I-95, the Royals knew they would have to adjust and execute their game plan to head back to the Beach with a win.
The Battling Bishops jumped out to a lead to start the first half, but back-to-back three pointers by Senior Darrin Clark (Suffolk, VA) and Sophomore Ichi Layne (Middlesex, VA) kept the deficit at one point. A few plays later Clark would earn a trip to the free throw line where he converted both attempts and then on the next possession, he found Freshman Chase Mullen (Virginia Beach, VA) underneath for an easy layup. However, NC Wesleyan was able to maintain their advantage and at the media timeout the score was 20-12. Junior Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) kept the scoring going with a driving layup and Clark then would convert a three-pointer but as the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime, the Royals trailed 49-31.
The second half saw the Battling Bishops go on a run to extend their lead until Freshman Joshua Hanna (Chesterfield, VA) put Regent on the board with a free throw. A few plays later Junior Dorian Tema (Frederick, MD) came up with a steal and found Freshman Grant Worley (Chesapeake, VA) for a quick fast break layup. Worley would score again on a turnaround jumper, which was followed by a three-pointer from Junior Emani Langley (Chesapeake, VA) and layup by Tema. Brown, Tema and Freshman Darcy Minega (Kigali, Rwanda) were able to score from the free throw line but as the final horn sounded the Royals fell by a final score of 100-66.
Clark finished the game with 15 points, 12 coming from three-pointers, while Brown added 10 points to go along with 3 rebounds. Minega and Brown were also perfect from the free throw line.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, December 6th when they host Toccoa Falls College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
