Augusta, GA – Coming of a win earlier this week, the Regent University Women's Basketball team traveled south to the Peach State for a match-up with NCAA Division II member Paine College. This would be a good road test for the Royals as they looked to put together a streak and head back to the Beach with the win.
Both teams tried to set early momentum to start the first quarter, and the Lions eventually took the early advantage. Regent was able to grab rebounds and that would eventually turn into scores by Sophomore My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) to cut the deficit to two points. A few possessions later, Sophomore Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) converted an inbound pass from Senior Courtney Rowley (Lusk, WY) into points, but as the quarter ended, Regent trailed 15-8.
The second quarter saw the Royals struggle on the offensive side of the court, but eventually Rowley would drive to the basket for the layup. Carter also found her way to the basket and suddenly Regent was slowly chipping away at the Paine lead. Carter continued to score but as the teams headed to the locker rooms for the half, the Royals found themselves behind 42-21.
Rowley put Regent on the board in the third quarter and that was followed by points from WIlliams and Senior Lyriq Reyes (Bogota, NJ). Williams would step up her intensity by taking the ball inside to draw fouls, which turned into points at the free throw line. However, the Royals could not cut into the lead and trailed at the end of the quarter 62-35.
The fourth quarter began with Reyes draining a three-pointer as Regent attempted to pull closer. Freshman Kaitlyn Russell (Fredericksburg, VA) would eventually find the basket, but the Royals were unable to make a comeback and fell by a final score of 77-45.
Carter led Regent with 17 points, while Rowley finished with 15 points to go along with her 9 rebounds. In addition, Reyes grabbed 7 rebounds.
Regent will be back in action next Friday, February 14th when they head back to Georgia to face Toccoa Falls College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
