Norfolk, VA - For the second time this season the Regent University Men's Volleyball team took the court against Averett University in a rematch of the season's opening weekend. The Royals were coming off of their first home win in program history last week and were looking to make it two in a row. They knew it would take a balanced attack and solid play from everyone if they were going to come away with the win and that is just what the Royals were able to do.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead to start he first set, but after a kill by Freshman
Preston Nemeti (Burke, VA) Regent pulled even at 4-4. After some back-and-forth, fellow Graduate Students
Aaron Campbell (Virginia Beach, VA) and
Colby Yawn (Chesapeake, VA) gave the Royals a three-point advantage after back-to-back kills. That was followed by a kill from Junior
Keith Larkin (Snohomish, WA) and another by Nemeti to keep Regent out in front and eventually Junior
Lucas Whitman (Suffolk, VA) helped win the set with a kill of his own, 25-18.
The Royals began to take control in the second set as Campbell and Larkin continued to score points at the net, while Yawn served up an ace for a quick five-point lead. It would increase to nine points after a Nemeti kill, combined with a number of Averett errors, and then Freshman
Theydon Roles (King George, VA) came off the bench to record a kill to keep the momentum. That allowed Campbell and Yawn to finish things off at the net to win the set 25-17.
The third set began with Larkin and Campbell continuing to earn points for Regent, and eventually they held the advantage 12-11. The Cougars were able to regain the lead, but Campbell and Flora didn't let them keep it for long and then Roles came up with a big service ace. That would be enough as Campbell closed out the match with back-to-back kills, earning the Royals a sweep, 3-0 (25-18).
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, March 29th, when they host Randolph College on Senior Day. First Serve is scheduled for 2:00pm.
