Norfolk, VA – A coastal storm blanketed the Hampton Roads area all day Tuesday, but that did not stop the Regent University Men's Soccer team from taking the field as they hosted Mary Baldwin University under the lights. While the rain and wind were heavy at times, the Royals remained focused and were ready to get back into the win column as they began a new week. However, in addition to battling the elements, they would also have to get past the Fighting Squirrels.
The first half began with a driving wind and rain, forcing Regent to be strategic with their runs. After establishing their offense, the Royals were able to get on the board first when Junior Yann-Olivier Kamga (Woodbridge, VA) took a rebound and fired it past the keeper to make the score, 1-0. Eight minutes later he would do it again, this time taking a corner kick from Senior Graylan Gill (Beaverdam, VA) to increase the advantage to two goals. Mary Baldwin would eventually get one back, but at the half Regent led 2-1.
Most of the second half saw both defenses stepping up to the challenge. Senior Drew Thomas (Lynchburg, VA) anchored the defense for the Royals, while Junior Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) stood tall in the goal, making a number of critical saves. That would allow Regent to breakthrough a the 84:44 mark of the game when Junior Connor Bailey (Powhatan, VA) received a pass from Freshman Jonathan Dedho-Amaya (Raleigh, NC) and then found the back of the net to extend the lead. A few minutes later Gill took advantage of the wind as he bent a corner kick into the top right corner and that would seal the game as the Royals defeated the Fighting Squirrels by a final score of 4-1.
Kamga finished the game with a team leading 2 goals on 6 shots, while Henriques recorded a total of 9 saves. As a team, Regent out shot Mary Baldwin 18-16, which was one of their highest offensive outputs of the season.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, September 20th when they travel to Lexington, VA to face Washington & Lee University. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
